"ACE BOOGIE" CAM NEWTON SIGNS WITH ICE BOX IN PREPARATION FOR SAOWALUK
Stephen A. Smith
Cam Newton (1-0) called for a shot at the Light-Heavyweight Champion Julius Washington (3-0), but instead he'll have to watch the champ defend his title against Markus Kreed (1-1) and he himself will have a chance to move to 2-0 and further make his case as he is set to fight Chakri Saowaluk (0-1) on the undercard for FFL Fight Night 2 in Los Angeles, CA.
Cam, who submitted Giovanni DeBruno in his debut, also made waves this week when he signed a contract to join Ice Box Unlimited MMA Academy in New York City. Newton says that three factors played into his decision to join the Ice Box, and all three seemed to make sense. First, Cam says that the Ice Box will take his already strong submission game and help him raise his game to an "unparalleled" level. The second reason has more to do with Cam's "day job" being an NFL Quarterback for the Carolina Panthers. Cam says that the Ice Box's North Carolina facility will help him train even during the NFL season, and that his connection to former CRW Owner and Ice Box founder, Talon Wilkinson was the deciding factor at the end of the day.
Cam Newton has been a hot ticket interview since his FFL
debut. He hopes that partnering with Ice Box MMA is the
next step towards a successful MMA career.
Cam will begin training in the Ice Box immediately, and his camp feels that his matchup with Chakri Saowaluk will continue to solidify his case as the top contender to the Light-Heavyweight championship.
While a win over winless Saowaluk isn't ground shattering, the Ice Box team believes that Cam can win decisively enough to show the world and matchmakers that he is a legitimate threat to Washington's (or Kreed's) FFL Light-Heavyweight championship belt.
Newton says he is looking to improve on his ground defense as well as his stand up defense in hopes of keeping damage to a minimum, but still allowing him to rely on his ability to lock in a submission.
Cam went 13 for 13 in Submission attempts last week, and many judges tipped their cap to Ace Boogie after the event saying the fight should have at least won Submission of the night.
Cam, of course, agreed wholeheartedly.
